The Roche Harbor Salmon Derby was a terrific finish to this year's official Wheel and Keel cruise schedule! Food, drink, laughter, and fish! Yes, lots of fish! Prizes were awarded for biggest, 1st, 2nd & 3rd place, as well as closest to drawn random weight. There was a raffle with many wonderful prizes to chose from, all donated by many of our local businesses. A big thanks to Gordon Lavigueure and Roger Schjelderup for an outstanding job of hosting this very special event!

Joni is all suited up for the fishing life and enjoying her time with friends!

We had good weather for early risers out on the water in their skiffs, utilizing all of their skills to catch salmon and win the big prize.

Some good catches and some just good for eating later.

Saturday evening's potluck dinner was amazing, since some of the best recipes in the northwest were on the tables. And afterward, a performance and sing along featuring Joe and Carol Young. Then, early to bed for Sunday morning's last chance to catch the winning fish! Gordon's fantastic breakfasts each morning were a big help in fueling the morning appetite. Happy fishing!

What a fine turnout for our Lopez Island Cruise and Golf Tournament! So many boats! So many golfers! So much incredibly great food and drink. And, after the winds of Friday evening, the weather played right into our hands. The challenges on the course were sure fun and everyone took advantage!

Joni swings a mighty club and looks quite comfortable here.

Reg shows us how to make this look easy, but it's not.

Mary keeps her head down and her shoulder straight.

Norma won "closest to the pin," here with Reg and Pete.

Willi won the putting contest, and the winning team was Eric Erickson, John Devolois & Ron Steen. Thanks to Willi and Nathan for putting this together! If you missed it this year, don't miss it next year. It's just one heck of a good time!

I want to thank everyone who boated up to Port Browning, on North Pender Island, B.C. for the Commodore's Cruise this year. What a fun group of boaters we have this year!

An Italian themed event, our dock food was sensational!

Played Bocce Ball, we ate and drank a bit and enjoyed each other's company.

And Guido showed up to hold up the Commodore for all he had on him.

Thank you all so very much!

    Commodore Joe Young

What a wonderful weekend for this event at Sucia Island. There were no winners and no losers for sure. Seven boats with Wheel and Keel burgees clung to the dock for food, drink, fish strategies, and some fine fish stories.

Hosted by Rick Rusher, Ron Erickson and Brad Hooper, the mood was lighthearted and informative. Thank you Duane, Mike, Mary, Issac, Andrea, Katie, and Carol for coming out and keeping it fun!

There was even a classic campfire for some cozy summing up of all the nips and giggles. Nice!

Past Commodore Cleve Schwenke hosted the 2018 Past Commodore's Cruise to Thetis Island, in B.C. It was a bit farther than the typical cruise, but worth every penny of fuel! We all docked at Telegraph Harbor Marina, which was quiet, clean, and beautiful.

We had the first ever BW&K four dinghy wine and cheese flotilla as the the sun set in Telegraph Harbor. We took a ferry trip to Chemainus on Vancouver Island. We walked trails, played bocce ball, ate, drank and talked until peace was enjoyed by all.

Thank you Cleve & Joni, for helping make this a grand, memorable cruise. Thank you Jim & Patty Jenkins, Dave and Amy Donnelly, and Carol Young for so much fun. Cheers!

The Bellingham Wheel & Keel presence at the visitors dock was so festive, thanks to Gordy Lavigueuere, Mona, the bridge, and all who participated in this incredible event.

Thanks to those who participated, and all of the visitors who came out to enjoy the free mexican food and celebrate with us all day long!

Openning Day next year will have a tough go to top this one! But, never underestimate the power of the force, of the BW&K!

Jan 5th, 2018 Northwood Hall, Bellingham

We just had our annual Installation Ceremony and Banquet last night. We had about 50 members and guests attend the event and a good time was had by all. We started at 6:00 pm with a no host bar and about an hour to socialize and watch a slide show of past club cruises and events. A great buffet dinner was prepared for us and started at 7:00 pm.

After dinner we had a presentation by Gordie Lavigueure recapping the cruises of 2017 and providing lots of humorous stories that happened along the way. Gordie is our clubs 3rd year Trustee.

Incoming Vice Commodore Rick Rusher made special presentations to Secretary Bev Brownrigg and Membership Secretary Lynn De Fehr thanking them for their service to the club in 2017. They were presented with an engraved plaque recording their years of service and also a gift. We could not function as a club without the diligent work of our bridge officers and secretaries.

Rick De Fehr made a presentation of the clubs new web site. The new site can be found at our original web address of You are all invited to go and check out the web site. All members are already entered into the site and you can go their, set your password and begin using the site. The site contains Event Registration, Membership Directory, Photo Albums, Discussion Forums and more. Rick De Fehr said “it is a work in progress and we will make alterations as we receive feedback from our users. Our hope is that the new website will give our members a fresh dynamic way to experience the Wheel and Keel Club.”

Gordon Lavigueure made the presentation to our Boating Family of the year, with an engraved plaque. The selection this year was to the Reg Alvord Family. Recognizing their years of participation in the club and their continuing involvement in our cruises and events. Congratulations to all of the Alvord's on their award. We all appreciate you.

Steve Ross was called upon as Master of Ceremonies and conducted the formalities of the Installation Ceremony. Our new officers for this year are Commodore Joe Young, Vice Commodore Rick Rusher and Rear Commodore Jim Jenkins. We welcome our new officers and look forward to a great 2018 boating season with Wheel and Keel under your guidance. Thanks to Steve Ross for his service in conducting the ceremony and bringing his professionalism to our proceedings.

Check out the new website and remember that annual membership renewals are now due. Our dues are still $35 per year for the whole family and you can easily pay online at the website and receive an invoice and receipt. Also remember that we will be having Nominations and Elections at our Feb 8thh meeting to fill positions for 1st Year Trustee, Treasurer, Secretary and Membership Secretary. We would appreciate all members making a concerted effort to attend this important meeting.

We look forward to seeing you all out on the water in 2018.

Friday January 5th we will be holding our annual Installation Ceremony and Banquet at the Northwood Hall. This event is our most attended event of the year, where we thank our 2017 Bridge for their service and welcome the new 2018 Bridge members. This is always a great event and we hope to see you there.  If you are a member, by now you will have received your invitation in the mail. We hope that you will RSVP promptly and take advantage of the savings by paying for the dinner in advance. We will also be having a special event this year as we will be unveiling our new Wheel & Keel website and inviting  you all to get connected and start communicating with the club and its members on-line. Don't miss it.
